“DEACON, WE SAW YOU DRIVE OUT FROM THE POST OFFICE WITHOUT YOUR SEATBELT ON!”

They’re watching!
A well-intended parishioner said the exact words of this post title to me one Sunday after Mass. Said in part out of concern, partly an admonition, I couldn’t help but be grateful to him for approaching me.
The message was indeed delivered in a way and by one who cared for my safety. It took guts. It’s the kind of message that could have gotten a very defensive reply. Admittedly it was a surprise to hear the acccusation. And while I could not remember as to whether I was actually wearing the seat belt at the particular moment (I rarely forget to wear a seat belt), I’ll assume it was plausible that the parishioner was correct.
The result was positive. I often considered whether I was putting on the seat belt for many weeks and months since that fateful challenge.
Fortunately too, I was not in an accident with a resultant injury which could have been made worse for not wearing the important protection.
Little challenges like these help us to be more accountable, better people, hopefully more holy.
Peace,
Deacon Tom Gotschall, The Deacon Dad at:
